How Do I Teach My Dog To Use A Litter Box?

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Thanks for visiting again! Let me know if there is anything you would like to see me cover by visiting the Ask Spike page.

Morgan POrch PottyHave you met Morgan the dog?  You probably recognize him from his inclusion in Spike’s Pack in May 2009.  This August, he will be moving into an apartment/condo setting as his mom starts graduate school.  All of the graduate students I have met are pretty busy people, and Morgan’s mom is a little worried about the possibility of days where she may not be able to get home from classes and stuff to let him out before his needs trump her schedule, if you know what I mean.  She asked me my thoughts on litter boxes or potty box products like the Porch Potty.

I have seen many litter boxes in my day, since I have several feline friends, but until Morgan’s mom asked me, I had not even heard of the Porch Potty.  If you were like me, you need some info.  I have included this video from their website to give you an idea of what it does and how it works.

Getting back to Morgan, it is important to note that he is totally housebroken.  In fact, he handles potty time and potty spots so well, that when he he visits other people’s homes, he only needs to be shown once which door goes outside for potty time, and he will consistently ask to go out that door, holding it in until he is outside.

Since Morgan is a small dog, I think that a litter box could be a very cool thing, but it may provide some mixed signals for him, since he is so well-behaved about potty time.  There are some days, mainly the really hot, really rainy, or really cold days, that I would like to have a little box inside to protect me from the elements.  Unfortunately, we have not seen one large enough for me.  Ever wonder what a litter box for a 110 pound Golden Retriever would look like?  Let me know if you see one.

Dogs are pretty smart about this potty stuff.  In fact, most of the time when people complain about their dog’s potty habits, it is usually something that the people did, or did not do that is the problem.  Once you start unloading things in Morgan’s new home, place the litter box in its permanent location.  Show Morgan where his new potty place is, and if the new place is large, you may have to confine Morgan with the litter box until he figures out the new location and uses it on the “long days.”

Keep in mind that moving can be traumatic for dogs, since they do not really understand what is happening.  During the packing and moving activities, try to keep the new routine as close to the old one as possible.  Morgan will have to learn new doors to enter and exit, where his new potty spot is, and where his toys and bowls have moved.  Even with a dog as smart as Morgan, there may even be a few accidents at first, but do not get upset.  Morgan has not forgotten everything he learned, he is still figuring things out in the new place!

Mom and I have taught a few classes about dog litter boxes.  Here in Atlanta, there are many high-rise apartment and condominium buildings, and that number keep growing.  The people that live in those buildings do not want to run down stairs or catching an elevator when it is potty time for their pup!

One time, Mom taught a class and one of the students lived in one of those big condo buildings in Buckhead, a swanky part of Atlanta.  Although the class was specifically about potty training, it never fails that people have questions about all kinds of other dog stuff.  In this class, someone asked about flea control, so Mom explained the options available to declare war on them.  The guy from Buckhead decided this was an appropriate time to announce to the whole class that his dogs did not have any fleas, did not get any fleas, etc.  He further explained that the reason his dog was flealess is because he lived in the Buckhead neighborhood!  Mom, the never-ending comedienne, asked the man if the fleas in Atlanta jumped off of dogs when they passed the “Welcome to Buckhead” sign?  After class, I suggested that perhaps there was a very small sign located under the welcoming sign that read, “Fleas Not Allowed.”

Training for the Porch Potty will be much the same, and I suggest you start using it before the move, if possible.  In the interest of full disclosure, after learning about the Porch Potty and trying one out, I became an affiliate for their company.  As you may have noticed, Mom and I do not endorse just anything.  To get my pawed seal of approval, I have to make sure it meets my standards.  If you find that it fits your needs, you can get $15 off by entering “askspikeonline” in the coupon code field, or you can click here.

Spike’s Pack: June 2009 – Duke Richard II

spikes-pack-duke-richard-ii

June 2009’s addition to Spike’s Pack is Duke Richard II.  Duke Richard II is 3.5-year-old Jack Russel mix, adopted from the Austin Humane Society. At the time of his adoption, Duke was a scruffy dog with a long wiry white coat and a bad case of heartworm. His adoptive parents had him shaved shortly after they took him home and were quite surprised to learn he had TONS of spots underneath all that white hair! Duke underwent heart worm treatment (that was a scary time) and is now healthy and happier than ever. Duke has the most personality of any dog I have ever known. He loves to dance, cuddle, play, and keep the squirrels out of the yard.

Duke has a younger sister, Sophie, who was also adopted from the Austin Humane Society. The two of them LOVE to play and wrestle, but most of all they love to spoon. On a warm Austin day, you’ll find Duke swimming in Lake Travis and enjoying some Frosty Paws.

Like Spike, Duke is a working dog and very computer literate, writing his own blog.

Congratulations to all of the nominees this month for their nomination, as well as Duke Richard II, for a fine showing in the voting, securing his spot in Spike’s Pack as the addition for June 2009.

Spike’s Pack: June 2009 Nominees

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

It is time to introduce the nominees for Spike’s Pack for June 2009.  Voting will commence Friday morning at 12:01 AM and conclude Sunday night at 11:59 PM, all times EST.  Congratulations to all those nominated, and good luck in the voting.

Nominee #1 – Webster Lee

spikes-pack-webster-leeWebster found his mom as he was on the lam.  His mom had no idea at the time, of course.  When she pulled into a parking lot, in customary fashion, she opened the door and talked to him.  After a half hour of coaxing, he got in the car.  He went home with her, and he considered his options.  A life of uncertainty or a loving home with four females?  He eventually worked his way into the house where the ladies promptly fell in love with him, and he had a home.

His mother, being the responsible dog lover she is, immediately placed an ad in the paper to find his owner.  The owner saw the ad, responded, crushing his new mother.  She had fallen hard.  As luck would have it, he had fallen quite hard himself.   After three days, the original owner called again and said that he was miserable.  He would not eat, and he was generally depressed.  She asked if Webster could return, as he was heartbroken without the love he experienced.  His new mom welcomed him back into her loving home, and they have been together ever since.

Nominee #2 – Duke Richard II

Nominee #3 – Gracie Cook

gracieGracie was adopted from the local SPCA in her hometown.  She had been abandoned along with her mother and SIX littermates.  At abandonment, she was just barely 7 weeks old, and she was the runt of the litter, weighing only 4lbs.  She is a Catahoula Leopard dog and Shepard mix.  She is 2 1/2 years old now, and she is the light of her mother’s life.  In fact, she cannot remember what life was like before Gracie.

She loves to stand on her hind legs and hug her mom, and she uses this position to give her a few paw slaps when Mom’s not listening to her.  Gracie truly is her baby, and there isn’t anything her loving mother wouldn’t do for her.  Her mom said “Having Gracie in my life makes my life worth living.  Life is so much fun with my girl.”

Nominee #4 -Nick and Beamer Horne

beamerHere are the whippets, Nick and Beamer, pride and joy of their household.

Nick is 3 years old and is quite the jokester. He still has a side to him that is pure puppy joy, hopping about when he is excited. He loves his stuffed animals and likes to play fetch.

Beamer is 5 years old and spends his day going from one comfortable spot to another, between couch, lazy chair and their own beds, perfecting the art of wrapping himself whippets-012under his blankets. He is a daddy’s boy and loves to stretch himself on his lap, when he settles in for the evening. Nobody has told Beamer he is not quite a lap dog.

Both dogs run on the treadmill every day and Nick does it twice, because he absolutely loves it. In fact, if anyone opens the door to the basement, Nick will shoot down, get on the treadmill and wait for it to be turned on.

Nick and Beamer are Brazilian, just like their mom. Since dad is American, they end up responding to commands in Portuguese and English, so I guess one can say they are bilingual whippets.

They are both pretty obedient and Nick had the pleasure of attending training classes with Spike.  However, if a furry creature is spotted, both will go deaf to mom and dad. Since whippets can clock at about 35 miles per hour on a flat sprint, they are always kept on a leash when out for walks.  Given the opportunity, both boys will lay motionless for hours in the sun.

Nominee #5 -Billy Weaver-Carman

billy-curledBilly the Siberian Husky here, and I would LOVE to join your pack!  I try to be so-so good all the time, and mostly I succeed…except when the red clay makes me dig it.  <sheepish grin>  This time of year the red clay makes me dig it a lot and mom gets kind of crabby.

Ok…she caught me typing that and now she’s taking over the keyboard…gotta go…see ya, Spike!

Hi Spike, and Billy’s right….he does like to dig and I do get tired of cleaning his feet before he can come in the house.  But otherwise, he’s the best dog ever.  Billy has a full name…Ch Kachme A Solocha Big Shot, CD, RN, OA, OAJ, WPD, CGC.  Those titles mean he’s a Champion show dog, an obedience and rally obedience titled dog, has four agility titles, a working pack dog title and earned his Canine Good Citizen certification.  He likes to play any game so long as he can play it with me, and so now we’re learning how to dance together like this:

That sport is called Canine Musical Freestyle, and Billy loves it.  I’m trying to find someone to help us learn how to track, because AKC offers a title called Versatile Companion Dog and the only thing he hasn’t proven himself at is tracking.  Earn that title and he becomes the third Siberian VSD and the first Champion Versatility Siberian Husky in the breed.   And Billy loves to sniff, snooter, and snuffle the entire world around him, so bet he’ll excel at tracking, too.  In addition, he was High in Agility Trial at the Siberian Husky Club of America’s National Specialty, where the top agility Siberians in the country competed.  He’s an amazing dog, and so much fun to work with and play with.

Billy’s done a lot of winning in his nine years with us, but the first winning was to win hubby Bob’s heart.  His sister Bonnie was already our chosen one from the litter, but Bob’s heart belonged to Billy.  Bob loves our dogs but has never offered to train any of them…he just likes to share the house with them.  I had Bonnie enrolled in puppy kindergarten and Bob was talking about Billy and why he couldn’t be our puppy instead of Bonnie.  I was firm…she was my choice, though my heart yearned for Billy, too.  So Bob did something he had never done before and not since:  he offered to take Billy to puppy kindergarten if we could have both puppies.  So that’s the first winning Billy did, and he’s been our most special dog ever since.

In December of 2007, Billy lost an eye.  He had a medical condition that his vet didn’t treat correctly and the next thing we knew, we were at the University of Georgia, making the decision to remove one eye and try delicate surgery to save the other.  Billy won the hearts of the staff and students during his stay in ICU, and he has a fan club each time we go back for a follow-up visit.  The work they do at UGA is phenomenal, but the physical plant leaves a lot to be desired, so in December of 2008, Billy started a fund-raising drive for a new teaching hospital for the veterinary program at UGA.  You can see the beginnings of his work here.

Beyond his willingness to work and play with me…beyond his to-the-Standard good looks and conformation…beyond his desire to help build a new hospital…Billy’s just the best dog-pal a person could ever have.  He warms the bed, cuddles on the couch, smiles and wags and woo-wooos when he’s happy.  We’re so lucky to have Billy in our lives.

Feel free to spread the word about your choice (be creative by using forums, posting on web pages, and calling all of your friends and family) and vote as often as PollDaddy will let you.  Re-visit this same post after midnight on the 5th to kickstart the voting.  We will announce the winner on Monday.  Good luck to all of the nominees, their friends and family.

Spike’s Pack: May 2009 – Morgan Yang

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

morgan1

May 2009’s addition to Spike’s Pack is Morgan Yang.  Morgan was adopted from Furry Friends Rescue on Mother’s day in 2007.  He was only supposed to be a short term foster, a few days and then he would go into another foster home that could better care for the 3 month old puppy.  His mother fell in love with him in 3 days and he was there to stay.  He’s the first puppy his mom has raised on her own, and she was scared. She read books, talked to people and realized he was such a good puppy!  He hardly chewed on anything, learned commands really quickly and was house broken in a few weeks.

He has taught her patience, kindness and a value and appreciation for the simple things in life.  He adores her as much as she does him.  He is now an ambassador and outreach volunteer for Furry Friends Rescue.  He spreads the word about the value of shelter and rescue dogs, blogs for Furry Friends Rescue and even helps out at adoption showcase.  His patience for children and people is wonderful and he’s always ready to have a good time – whether hiking, going to the beach or enjoying an afternoon at the coffee shop.

He loves his treats, any kind of treats, (according to him, nothing with vegetables in it is considered remotely treat like).  He also completed 18 weeks of puppy training and is now learning Flyball, a dog sport.  He loves to play and is always looking for someone to throw the ball or play tug-o-war.  He lives a very happy life, away from a cold shelter floor and in a warm comfy forever home.  He hopes all animals find a place where they go from abandoned to adopted and adored.

Congratulations to all of the nominees this month for their nomination, as well as Morgan, for a fine showing in the voting, securing his spot in Spike’s Pack as the addition for May 2009.
